Simple Things

“3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act,” Psalm 37:3-5, ESV.

I just completed a 40 day prayer challenge. I ended up going on prayer walks around my church and at a local college. These walks started out solo, but soon grew to include friends and family.

One time as I walked around our church, I had the sweet company of a two year old and a four year old. Prayer walks with kids is a bit different than with adults. It’s simple, uncomplicated. As we walked, we soon used objects to keep us focused. One such object was an orange traffic cone. Since there was road work being done on the adjacent street, there were plenty of orange cones to be found.

Every time we saw one we’d touch it and thank God for something. The thanksgiving prayers of a four year old brought deep delight. They were sweet, raw and unfiltered.

Soon this habit was incorporated into all my daily walks. By myself or with company, we’d stop by these cones and give thanks. It ended up being one of my favorite things to do. We were delighting ourselves in the LORD.

Recently a mom of one of my prayer partners said, “We’re now stopping at every fire hydrant to pray when we walk, and there are a lot of them around!”

Something simple has begun to catch on, leading us to delight in the Lord together.

What are your simple things that bring you the delight of the LORD?

Have you shared your “simple things” with your family and friends so others can delight in the LORD, as well?

Father,

The joy we have in You is unmistakable. Thank You for honoring Your word that says:

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded,” James 4:7-8, NIV.

You promise that when we submit ourselves to You and draw near, that You, likewise, will draw near to us. Thank You.

Your presence is life changing, and I for one am so grateful for it. Thank You that You will never leave me.

Thank You that You are with me always, to the end of days.

Thank You that I can trust Your word.

I am filled with joy, that with just a “Thank You,” there’s a delight in doing so. This brings so much hope in my current situations and the future.

Teach us and remind us to appreciate You daily.

Amen.
